SPIMBY

Det tog ett tag, närmare bestämt tio år. Svårt att tro, men det är tio år sedan jag senast publicerade en bok med gatufotobilder. Det har blivit några andra böcker under tiden, men renodlat gatufoto från Stockholm, det är tio år sedan.

Boken heter SPIMBY, en akronym för Street Photography In My Back Yard. Titeln hänger samman med en artikel jag skrev på engelska för några år sedan och det handlar om hur jag fungerar som fotograf. Åker jag iväg, då blir jag turistfotograf på en gång. Det är endast på hemmaplan där miljön är bekant, som jag kan fokusera på det jag vill med mitt fotografi.

Eftersom det är länge sedan jag publicerade något så fanns det rätt mycket material att välja mellan. Efter mitt första grova urval hade jag 650 bilder. Ett antal gallringar senare, inklussive konsultation av några vänner så kokade boken ner till 209 bilder på 220 sidor. 

Det som smärtar mest är att den blev dyr. Där funderade jag också en god stund, plus att jag konsulterade några andra vänner. Det tydligaste råd jag fick var att inte tumma på kvaliteten. Jag funderade på mjuka pärmar och tunnare papper för att radikalt sänka priset, men nu valde jag att följa de goda råd jag fick och då blev det en bok 21×21 cm med tjocka pärmar, 200 g blankt papper och trådbindning. Jag kollade också vad boken skulle kostat om den var hälten så tjock, men det blev inte halva priset. Att göra en bok på 110 sidor för 250 sek som jag gjort förr, det går inte längre, inflationen har även ätit sig in i bokbranschen. Boken finns att köpa här SPIMBY (bod.se) . Den kommer snart även ut som e-bok och om jag uptäcker att det verkligen finns en efterfrågan på ett billigare alternativ så kanske jag också gör varianten med mjuka pärmar, tunt papper och limbindning. Det får framtiden utvisa.

It took a while, more precisely ten years. Hard to believe, but it’s been ten years since I last published a book of street photography images. There have been a few other books in the meantime, but pure street photography from Stockholm, that was ten years ago.

The book is called SPIMBY, an acronym for Street Photography In My Back Yard. The title is related to an article I wrote in English a few years ago and it is about how I work as a photographer. If I go away, then I will become a tourist photographer at once. It is only at home where the environment is familiar, that I can focus on what I want with my photography. Since it has been a long time since I published anything, there was quite a lot of material to choose from. After my first rough selection, I had 650 images. A number of reductions later, including consulting some friends, the book boiled down to 209 images on 220 pages.

What hurts the most is that it became expensive. I gave this problem a lot of thoughts, plus I consulted some other friends. The clearest advice I received was not to skimp on quality. I thought about soft covers and thinner paper to radically reduce the price, but now I chosed to follow the good advice I received and then it became a book 21×21 cm with hard covers, 200 g glossy paper and sawn binding. I also checked what the book would have cost if it was half that thick, but it wasn’t half the price. To make a book of 110 pages for 250 sek as I used to do, it is no longer possible, inflation has also eaten into the book industry. The book can be bought here SPIMBY (bod.se). It will soon also come out as an e-book and if I discover that there is really a demand for a cheaper alternative, I might also make the variant with soft covers, thin paper and glue binding.
